Pointe Coupee Dance Academy will present its 21st annual recital, “Dancing with the Stars” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, at the William H. Scott Civic Center.

The evening’s performance will include techniques such as ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, hip hop and tumbling to songs that are about stars and dancing.

The students are under the direction of Vicki Cannon, owner/instructor; Camila Carrera, hip hop instructor; and Sydney Johnson, tumbling instructor.

A highlight of the show will be two graduating seniors – Mariah Kador and Dere’Ana Maloid – performing their self-choreographed graduate solo to the song of their choice.

Mariah Kador, 18, is the daughter of Marvin and LaRae Kador, of New Roads. She has been with Pointe Coupee Dance Academy for 13 years and was a member of the former competition team.

Kador has chosen to tap to her favorite poem, “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou and a song mixed with the poem.

Kador graduated in 2020 from the STEM Magnet Academy of Pointe Coupee with a 4.3 GPA.

She has decided to further her education at Northwestern State University majoring in biology. She has been selected to join the Presidential Leadership Program, as well as the Purple Pizazz Pom Line.

After receiving her degree, Kador plans to continue her education at LSU Health Shreveport, where she plans to become a dermatology physician assistant.

Dere’Ana Maloid, 18, is the daughter of Derese and Daisy Maloid, of Ventress.

She has been with the dance academy for 12 years and was also a class helper.

Maloid is a 2020 graduate of the STEM Academy, where she was a member of Student Council.

She plans on attending college to major in nursing. She also plans to return to dance academy in her free time to assist with classes.
