Ceremony honors those who served
Pointe Coupee Parish proved last week that a salute to veterans could take place, even in a time rife with cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chairs were spread out a little farther, but it did not stop the traditional ceremony for veterans at the Pointe Coupee Veterans Monument.
Approximately 100 veterans attended the event, which featured a speech from a Pointe Coupee Parish resident, Col. Greg St. Romain, 225th Engineer Brigade commander.
Camille LeJeune Jr., American Legion NEC-Detachment adjutant, provided the opening and closing remarks.
Pointe Coupee Parish Farm Bureau Queen Sarah Brown presented the wreath for the ceremony, while Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts also assisted in the ceremony.
The Lakeland Knights of Columbus cooked pastalaya for the event, and the New Roads Knights of Columbus prepared jambalaya. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts served drinks at the event.
Super 1 Food Store provided the food for the event.
Others who helped with the event included the City of New Roads, Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux, American Legion Auxiliary 268, and Ladies from the Presbyterian Church.
