Catholic High of Pointe Coupee coach David Simoneaux likes to see a balanced effort by both the Hornet offense and defense.
Senior running back-defensive back Matthew Langlois tried his best.
The LSU commitment scored two offensive touchdowns – on a 13-yard run and 15-yard reception – and two defensive touchdowns – on a 55-yard interception return and a 15-ayrd fumble return.
And there was that 2-point PAT run too.
The four-touchdown effort led Catholic-PC to a 43-0 win over North Central on Friday, Nov. 13.
Simoneaux had a tongue-in-cheek evaluation of Langlois’s performance.
“He was the only one I was disappointed with because I wanted him to let us run a few more plays on offense, but he kept scoring on defense,” he said.
The quick lead allowed Catholic-PC to use a lot of players.
“We love to see those young guys get in there and do well and they certainly did,” Simoneaux said.
“This is a good program win. I thought our first group got in there in the first half and executed flawlessly and that’s what you want.
“We got in and got out. We got some reps against the varsity group and get back on the bus healthy.”
The win sets up a showdown for the District 5-1A title on Friday, Nov. 20, in Eunice when the Hornets meet St. Edmund.
Catholic-PC is 3-0 in 5-1A and 5-2 overall going into the contest with St. Edmund, 2-0 in district and 4-1 overall.
“Now we get ready for a district championship,” Simoneaux said.
“I think (St. Edmund) has a really good football team and its always tough to go over there and win.
“We look forward to starting to prepare for them and to get ourselves another district championship.”
Catholic-PC built a 30-0 first-quarter lead on North Central (0-4, 0-6) and a running clock was instituted with 4 minutes left in the quarter.
The Hurricanes were held to 3 yards offense in the first half and never held the ball for more than four plays.
Andrew Jewell opened the scoring for Catholic-PC on its first possession with a nine-yard touchdown run. Highlights of the drive were Chayse Bureige’s 36-yard pass from Aiden Vosburg and Hunter Beard’s 18-yard run.
Spencer Lacoste then recovered a North Central fumble at the Hurricane 36. Vosburg, who went 4 for 6 for 87 yards and one score, hit Jewell for a 17-yard gain.
Langlois then got his first touchdown on a 13-yard run and in a bit of trickery, Cole Walker ran in the 2-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.
On North Central’s next possession, Langlois intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.
The Hornets forced a Hurricane punt and mounted a 4-play, 66-yard drive.
Vosburg rolled out for a 32-yard run to the Hurricane 15 and on the next play passed 15 yards to Langlois for a touchdown. Cameron Decoteau’s kick made it 30-0.
Catholic-PC’s last score of the first half came on North Central’s next possession, when Travis Williams fumbled a handoff and Langlois scooped it up and returned it 15 yards for a TD.
Jacob Pinsonat intercepted quarterback Tyler Joseph on North Central’s first possession of the second half.
With Connor Achee directing the offense, the Hornets moved 57 yards in 5 plays, capped by Landon Frey’s 2-yard touchdown run.
