Loretta Magdalen “Magda” Lieux Bonnette passed peacefully the morning of November 8, 2023, with the love of her family surrounding her. Born February 15, 1935 in New Roads to Azema Lorio and Joseph Bertrand “Bert” Lieux, she was the eighth child of eleven. Magda graduated from St. Joseph Academy as valedictorian in 1953 and Louisiana State University in 1957 with her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education. She also served as president of her sorority, Delta Zeta. Magda married John Charles “Charlie” Bonnette and had three children, Mary Frances “Fran” Bonnette Smith Holte (Lorie), Charlene Elizabeth Bonnette, and John Lewis Bonnette II (Sarah). After 21 years as a military wife and member of the Officer’s Wives’ Association and chairing numerous committees during her husband’s years of active duty, the family settled in New Roads, Magda’s home town. She was a long-standing member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Reading Circle. Magda was a dedicated parishioner of St. Mary of False River, serving on numerous committees from 1980 to 2010. She was President of the Altar Society from 1992-2009, Lead Coordinator of St. Mary Service Center during the 1980s and 1990s, and a Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion until a few years ago. Magda loved her family, especially her two grandchildren, Scott L. Smith, Jr. (Ashton) and Thomas C. Bonnette, and her six great-grandchildren, Lucy, Charlie, Elijah, Elizabeth, Jude, and Benedict Smith. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and nine brothers and sisters: Bert (Shirley), Frances (Levy), Lucille (Gene), Ted (Mary Alice), Sister Beth, Sister Bert, Charles, Edward (Meredith), and John (Laverne). She is survived by her children, brother Ralph Lieux, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
